Over Memorial Day Weekend my sister and I did a sister + Samson camping trip. We wanted to get out of town and in the mountains but didn’t book anything in advance so we ended up camping on a farm!
We left on Friday and wanted to explore a bit before setting up camp. We were planning to go hiking off of Cottonwood Pass but when we drove up there we didn’t realize it was still going to be covered in snow. We really didn’t have the right clothes on either, so ended up turning around but it was an awesome drive up. The views were unreal and Samson was very pleased to see snow again!
We turned around at the top of the pass and headed back down towards Cottonwood Lake. We love a good alpine lake so spent the rest of the day at the lake and walked around the area. Samson also got to do what Samson does best, SWIM!
I have to say, I’m obsessed with Dave’s bucket hat and stole it for the weekend. I need to get myself one and I mostly love it because it really does keep you cool and is great for sun protection.
After hanging at the lake for the afternoon, we went to the farm to go set up camp. The farm had rescue ducks, chickens, horses, and dogs. We also bought some fresh honey and eggs from them. After our tent was pitched we went into Buena Vista to get some dinner. We ended up doing take out burgers, salad, french fries and mac n cheese. Yes, we feasted and brought it all back to our tent to eat and watch the sunset. I mean, the view from our tent was pretty legit so we had to take advantage of it!
After dinner we sat on our camping chairs, had some tea and read some books. And it was an early night in for us!
The next morning we woke up and Samson was sandwiched all snuggly in between us. But what we really woke up to was to the sound of the hot air balloons floating above us. It was so pretty and pristine, the morning view looked like a fake backdrop.
We made tea and oatmeal for breakfast. Enjoyed the view for a bit and then drove towards the Brown Creek Falls trailhead for a waterfall hike. Waterfall hikes this time of year are also special because the snowmelt makes them so much more intense. The trial was great and it felt so good to feel my hiking legs again.
After our hike we went into Salida for some lunch and walked around town for a bit. We were tired by then so decided to find a place to set up our hammocks and chill for the rest of the afternoon.
I’m convinced hammocks are one of the best ways to relax! We stayed one might night at our camp spot and the next morning packed up and headed back home. I was definitely looking forward to a shower!
